VINAGRI News - Arabica coffee, first cultivated in Son La in the 1990s, has now become a key crop contributing significantly to agricultural restructuring, improving farmers’ incomes, and boosting the province’s export value.
Officials in Muoi Noi commune guide farmers on coffee plant care.
By 2025, Son La’s coffee area reached 24,300 hectares, with an estimated output of 37,724 tonnes, accounting for over 41% of Vietnam’s total Arabica coffee area. The province currently has 28 enterprises and cooperatives engaged in production and processing, 7 of which have been granted the right to use the “Son La Coffee” geographical indication, exporting products to 20 countries and providing stable livelihoods for 18,000 farming households. In 2024, Son La exported 31,700 tonnes of green coffee, earning USD 88.77 million, up 9.33% year-on-year, representing nearly 45% of the province’s total export turnover.
Localities such as Muoi Noi commune have seen clear benefits: with over 2,448 hectares of coffee, an average yield of 11 tonnes of fresh cherries per hectare, generating VND 170 - 200 million in revenue and over VND 140 million in profit per hectare. Thanks to coffee cultivation, the commune’s poverty rate dropped sharply to 21.9% by the end of 2024.
Many new cooperatives have been established with a focus on high-tech, linked production. A prime example is the Sang Na Tre Agricultural Cooperative (Chieng Mai commune), which partners with enterprises for technical transfer, invests in solar-powered drying systems, and aims to build a specialty Arabica coffee brand for Son La.
However, challenges remain as many coffee areas are aged with low yields, requiring replanting; production remains small-scale, with limited capital and inadequate drying and storage infrastructure.
According to the Son La Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province will continue to support replanting programs, encourage value-chain linkages, and by 2025, aims for 30% of fresh coffee output to be industrially processed, with 5% deeply processed, positioning Son La Arabica coffee as a strong brand in both domestic and international markets.
