Vietnam pepper prices hold steady; China boosts imports from Vietnam, cuts purchases from Indonesia

VINAGRI News - Pepper prices in Vietnam held steady while export values to China surged, reflecting the country's growing market share as Indonesia’s shipments declined. The global market showed mixed trends due to shifts in local currencies and export demand.

Pepper market overview (Week 2, October)


Domestic pepper prices in Vietnam were stable at VND 146,000 - 149,000 per kilogram. Export prices continued to trade in the range of USD 6,600 - 6,800 per ton for 500 g/l and 550 g/l grades.


According to data from the International Pepper Community (IPC), black pepper from Lampung, Indonesia edged up by USD 3/ton to USD 7,233/ton. Brazil’s black pepper (ASTA 570) remained steady at USD 6,200/ton, while Malaysia’s Kuching black pepper was unchanged at USD 9,500/ton.


At the same time, white pepper from Muntok, Indonesia rose slightly by USD 3/ton to USD 10,091/ton, while Malaysian ASTA white pepper and Vietnamese white pepper were stable at USD 12,500/ton and USD 9,250/ton, respectively.


Global pepper market trends


The IPC reported mixed reactions across producing countries in the second week of October, influenced by local currency fluctuations and varying supply conditions.


India: Domestic and export prices rose, supported by a 1% appreciation of the Indian Rupee (87.96 INR/USD).


Indonesia: Both domestic and export prices recorded moderate gains after four weeks of stability.


Malaysia: Prices continued to decline for the second consecutive week due to weak export demand.


Sri Lanka: Domestic prices fell after three weeks of stability amid limited domestic buying.


Vietnam: Domestic prices inched up slightly, while export prices held steady in a balanced market.


Brazil: Prices fell for the third week in a row.


Cambodia: Black pepper prices declined, while China’s white pepper remained unchanged.


China’s pepper import ttrends (Jan - Aug 2025)


According to China Customs, the country imported a total of 6,390 tons of pepper worth USD 43.4 million during the first eight months of 2025 - down 14.6% in volume but up 19.8% in value year-on-year.


Indonesia remained the largest supplier with 3,174 tons, down 27.9%, accounting for 49.7% of China’s total imports (compared with 58.8% a year earlier).


Vietnam shipped 2,572 tons, up 10.4%, lifting its market share from 31.1% to 40.2%.


Brazil exported 437 tons, up 93.6%, capturing 6.8% market share.


Malaysia supplied 119 tons, down 61.8%, representing 1.9% of the total.


Vietnam’s average export price to China reached USD 7,212/ton, up 51.7% year-on-year - notably higher than Indonesia’s USD 6,363/ton (+37.7%) and Brazil’s USD 4,375/ton (+30.2%).
