Lam Dong, Vietnam’s largest coffee-producing region, spans 327,000 hectares with an estimated annual output of over 1 million tons, accounting for more than half of the country’s total coffee production. Following the merger of Dak Nong, Binh Thuan, and Lam Dong provinces, the region continues to lead the nation in both scale and value of coffee production.
Unique terroir and scientific basis of GI
The distinctive characteristics of Lam Dong coffee stem from its diverse topography, optimal cultivation altitude, fertile soil, and temperate climate.
Arabica: grown in highland areas; beans have a blue-gray color, moderate caffeine content, mild aroma, light acidity, and a sweet aftertaste.
Robusta: grown at medium altitude; beans have a dark brown color, notes of fresh fruit, chocolate, and caramel, full-bodied flavor, with higher caffeine and protein content.
The GI protection covers the entire value chain, from harvesting (ensuring required ripeness) to processing, roasting, and packaging, guaranteeing traceability, quality, and consistency.
Sustainable development and export expansion
The Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Environment will implement GI management regulations, coordinating with enterprises, cooperatives, and farmers to establish a sustainable coffee value chain, quality control, and market expansion for exports.
The province aims to optimize raw material regions, apply sustainable cultivation techniques, protect upstream forests, and standardize processing methods. Training programs, technical guidance, and the development of digital traceability systems are being rolled out to support producers and enhance market competitiveness.
Enhancing Vietnam’s coffee brand
According to provincial authorities, GI certification is not only a recognition of Lam Dong’s unique coffee value, but also a strategic step to strengthen processing capacity, promote integrated production-consumption-export links, increase farmer incomes, and elevate Vietnam’s coffee reputation globally.
