VINAGRI News - Vietnam is expected to export more than 7.7 million tonnes of rice in 2026, supported by stable output, higher yields, and a continued focus on high-quality and fragrant rice, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
Summary:
> Vietnam targets over 7.7 million tonnes of rice exports in 2026
> Total paddy production forecast at 43.55 million tonnes, slightly higher year-on-year
> High-quality and fragrant rice to make up 75% of export volumes
> Export supplies concentrated in the Mekong Delta
> Government to enhance market oversight, digital monitoring, and policy reforms
Vietnam is projected to export more than 7.7 million tonnes of rice in 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said, as the country seeks to maintain its position among the world’s leading rice exporters while ensuring domestic food security.
To support exports at this level, the ministry has urged the Ministry of Industry and Trade to intensify export promotion, particularly during peak harvest periods such as the winter - spring crop in March - April and the summer - autumn crop in July - September, when output is at its highest.
Nationwide, Vietnam’s rice cultivation area in 2026 is estimated at 7.09 million hectares, down 36,000 hectares from the previous year. However, average yields are expected to rise to 6.14 tonnes per hectare, up 0.03 tonnes per hectare year-on-year. As a result, total paddy production is forecast at 43.552 million tonnes, slightly higher than in 2025.
Exportable rice supplies will be concentrated mainly in the Mekong Delta, with total paddy output estimated at 24.34 million tonnes. Domestic consumption in the region, including Ho Chi Minh City, seed use, animal feed and other purposes, is projected at around 8.9 million tonnes, leaving approximately 15.46 million tonnes of marketable paddy, equivalent to about 7.73 million tonnes of export-grade rice.
In terms of product structure, high-quality and fragrant rice is expected to account for around 5.8 million tonnes, or 75% of total exportable rice. Glutinous rice is estimated at 773,000 tonnes (around 10%), while rice used for processing is projected at nearly 1.2 million tonnes, or 15%. Exportable rice volumes are expected to exceed 4 million tonnes in the first half of the year, with around 3.7 million tonnes shipped in the second half.
The ministry also stressed the importance of maintaining minimum mandatory commercial stockpiles, strengthening inventory reporting, and gradually developing digital monitoring and early-warning systems to track rice supply-demand risks. These measures aim to support flexible export management while safeguarding domestic food security and ensuring the ability to stabilize the local market when required.
On the trade side, the ministry called for stronger trade promotion efforts, greater market and product diversification, and tighter coordination between exporters, processors, traders and local authorities. It also urged enhanced oversight of rice procurement activities to prevent fraud, price manipulation and speculation, ensuring balanced benefits for farmers and businesses.
Looking ahead, the ministry said it will contribute policy input toward amending Decree 107/2018 on rice export business, as well as developing mechanisms to manage rice imports to protect domestic production and the rice value chain, amid growing efforts by major importing countries to strengthen food self-sufficiency.
