Vietnam’s pangasius farmers cheer as prices stay firm in An Giang

VINAGRI NewsPangasius prices in Vietnam’s An Giang province remain stable at VND 29,000 - 31,000 per kilogram, ensuring solid profits for farmers. Total aquaculture output rose over 10% from a year earlier, while major exporters continue to invest in high-tech farming and processing to boost quality and competitiveness.

Summary:

> Pangasius prices hold steady between VND 29,000 - 31,000/kg, delivering healthy profits.

An Giang’s pangasius output tops 503,000 tons, up 5.6% year-on-year.

Nam Viet Corporation exports 320 - 350 containers of pangasius monthly.

Officials warn farmers against expanding too quickly without buyer contracts.

The province targets over 1.6 million tons of aquaculture output in 2025.

Stable prices spur farmer confidence

This farming season, Ngo Van Dau, a pangasius farmer from Cho Vam commune in Vietnam’s southern An Giang province, invested more than 3 hectares in fish farming, achieving an average yield of 700 - 800 tons per hectare. With favorable prices, he reported strong profits and plans to reinvest in the next cycle.

Currently, traders are purchasing pangasius weighing over 1 kilogram for VND 30,000 - 31,000 per kilogram, depending on payment terms, while smaller fish fetch around VND 29,000 per kilogram.

“It’s been years since pangasius prices stayed this stable,” Mr Dau said. “After deducting costs, farmers are making good profits. We just hope prices remain steady so we can continue farming confidently.”

Nam Viet leads in high-tech pangasius farming

Nam Viet Corporation, based in My Thoi ward, An Giang, is one of Vietnam’s leading pangasius producers, operating 600 hectares of high-tech farms in Chau Phu district.

CEO Doan Toi said that strict adherence to international standards - covering water systems, pond management, and processing - requires significant investment but pays off in efficiency and product quality.

“Our fish are healthier, yields increase by 3 - 5%, and production costs are lower,” Mr Toi said. “On average, Nam Viet exports 320 to 350 containers of pangasius each month.”

He added that export demand, particularly from China and the United States, has improved toward year-end, helping to lift raw fish prices. Still, he urged farmers to maintain stable production and adhere to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards to secure higher margins.

Output and prices on the rise

According to the An Giang Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province’s pangasius production reached 503,400 tons in the first nine months of 2025, up 5.62% from a year earlier. Total aquaculture output climbed 10.86% to 885,600 tons, exceeding the annual target by 13%.

Deputy Director Tran Thanh Hiep said raw pangasius prices in the Mekong Delta have hovered around VND 29,000 per kilogram, up VND 2,000 - 3,000 from the same period last year.

“At current prices, farmers are earning profits of at least VND 3,000 per kilogram, depending on their production scale and methods,” he said.

Caution against overexpansion

Hiep noted that most pangasius farms are now managed by large companies with vertically integrated supply chains - from breeding and feed production to processing and export - helping stabilize both quantity and quality.

However, he cautioned that the current price surge may be temporary.

“Farmers should avoid expanding production without guaranteed contracts with processors, as the market can quickly shift from shortage to oversupply,” Mr Hiep warned.

He also encouraged greater technology adoption and closer cooperation between farmers and exporters to ensure sustainable growth.

An Giang eyes 1.6 million tons in 2025

For 2025, An Giang aims to achieve more than 1.616 million tons of total aquaculture output, including 648,900 tons of pangasius, according to the provincial agriculture department. The province also plans to reach over 9.2 million tons of total fisheries output nationwide during the 2026 - 2030 period, focusing on value-added processing to enhance competitiveness in global markets.
