Market overview
According to data from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam exported 13,400 tons of tea in August 2025, valued at over USD 25 million. This represents a 13.8% decline in volume and a 14.6% decline in value compared with August 2024, marking the third consecutive month of year-on-year decreases.
For the first eight months of 2025, tea exports totaled 85,000 tons, bringing in nearly USD 146 million, down 9.6% in volume and 10.4% in value from the same period last year. The average export price was USD 1,714 per ton, down 0.9% year-on-year. This downward trend reflects ongoing challenges in achieving significant breakthroughs in both value-added processing and market expansion.
Key export markets
Pakistan remained the top buyer of Vietnamese tea, importing over 30,000 tons worth more than USD 58 million in the first eight months of 2025 - an increase of 0.6% in volume but a decline of 6.3% in value compared with the same period in 2024.
Taiwan ranked second with 9,180 tons, valued at over USD 17 million, representing a 6.6% drop in volume but a 1.6% rise in value.
Exports to several markets showed positive growth, including Malaysia, Iraq, India, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. In contrast, shipments to Taiwan, China, Indonesia, Russia, the United States, Poland, and the United Arab Emirates declined.
Outlook
In the remaining months of 2025, Vietnam’s tea exports are forecast to remain stable with a modest increase driven by seasonal consumption. However, overall annual growth is likely to stay subdued due to heavy dependence on Pakistan and declining orders from traditional markets.
Long-term strategy
To achieve sustainable growth, Vietnam’s tea sector must:
. Enhance product quality through improved cultivation and processing,
. Strengthen brand recognition in global markets,
. And expand into new, high-potential markets to reduce reliance on a few major buyers.
