Vietnam tea exports surge nearly 30% in January 2026 as market shifts reshape trade

VINAGRI News - Vietnam’s tea exports rose sharply in January 2026, with shipment volume increasing nearly 30% year-on-year, according to Vietnam Customs. While traditional markets showed mixed performance, exports to several destinations - including the Philippines - recorded strong growth, signaling a notable shift in market structure driven by quality and traceability requirements.

Summary:

> Tea exports reached 12,390 tonnes worth nearly US$21 million in January 2026.

Export volume rose 28% and value increased 27% year-on-year.

Average export price stood at US$1,686 per tonne.

Shipments to the Philippines surged over 500% in volume.

Pakistan, Taiwan and China were the top three markets, accounting for 25.8% of total export turnover.

According to Vietnam Customs, Vietnam exported 12,390 tonnes of tea in January 2026, earning nearly US$21 million, up 28% in volume and 27% in value compared with January 2025.

The average export price in January 2026 reached US$1,686 per tonne, down 2.29% from December 2025 and 0.45% lower year-on-year.

A notable development is the clear shift in export markets. Tea exports to Russia, India and Poland posted strong growth, while shipments to the Philippines recorded a triple-digit surge, soaring 544.7% in volume and 312.2% in value compared with the same period in 2025.

Meanwhile, performance in the two largest markets - China and Taiwan - showed contrasting trends. Exports to China improved, whereas shipments to Taiwan declined.

In January 2026, Vietnam’s tea exports generated the highest turnover from three markets: Pakistan, Taiwan and China, which together accounted for 25.8% of the country’s total tea export value.

China ranked as the largest market, importing 1.14 thousand tonnes worth US$1.52 million, representing a 9.2% share in total export volume.

Taiwan followed closely with 1.13 thousand tonnes valued at US$2.2 million, accounting for 9.16% of total exports.

Tea exports to Pakistan saw a sharp decline, reaching 930 tonnes valued at US$1.55 million. This represented a drop of more than 38% in both volume and value compared with December 2025, and a decrease of over 70% year-on-year. Pakistan’s share of Vietnam’s total tea exports fell significantly from 35.2% in January 2025 to 7.5% in January 2026.

According to the Agriculture and Environment Newspaper, the export market structure in 2026 is expected to evolve depending on product quality, traceability, and brand storytelling. Growing market shares in Taiwan and China highlight the need for Vietnam’s tea industry to further focus on quality-driven development.
