Rice market cools down as exports slow and demand weakens across Asia

VINAGRI News - According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), as of October 15, Vietnam’s rice exports reached 7.022 million tons, worth USD 3.588 billion, down 4.4% in volume and 21.94% in value compared to the same period in 2024. Despite the solid export performance, domestic rice prices have weakened as exporters slowed purchases amid sluggish demand in key overseas markets.

Summary:

> Vietnam exported over 7 million tons of rice, down slightly year-on-year.

Domestic rice prices softened as exporters slowed purchases and foreign demand weakened.

Asian rice prices stayed near multi-year lows, especially in Thailand.

Bangladesh stepped up imports to stabilize its domestic market.

Production in Vietnam remained stable, with good yields from the Summer-Autumn and Autumn-Winter crops.

During the past week, 5% broken fragrant rice was quoted at USD 420 - 435 per ton, unchanged from the previous week and near a two-month low. A trader in Ho Chi Minh City noted that domestic trading activity remained subdued, as many exporters reduced paddy buying from farmers due to weak foreign demand.

In the Mekong Delta, premium fragrant paddy fetched up to VND 5,650/kg, averaging VND 5,379/kg, down VND 21 from last week. Conversely, regular paddy edged up VND 46/kg, averaging VND 5,161/kg.

For raw rice, brown rice grade 1 dropped VND 213/kg to VND 8,175/kg, while grade 2 declined VND 218/kg to VND 7,964/kg. Milled white rice grade 1 fell VND 120/kg to a high of VND 9,750/kg, and grade 2 decreased VND 105/kg to VND 9,050/kg.

According to the Institute of Agricultural Strategy and Policy, paddy prices in Can Tho remained stable: Jasmine at VND 8,400/kg, OM18 at VND 6,800/kg, IR5451 at VND 6,200/kg, and ST25 at VND 9,400/kg.

In An Giang, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment reported further declines: IR50404 dropped to VND 4,800 - 5,000/kg, OM5451 to VND 5,300 - 5,500/kg, OM18 to VND 5,500 - 5,700/kg, Dai Thom 8 to VND 5,600 - 5,800/kg, and OM380 to VND 5,700 - 5,900/kg.

At the retail level, rice prices in An Giang were mostly steady: regular rice at VND 12,000 - 14,000/kg, Thai fragrant rice at VND 20,000 - 22,000/kg, Jasmine at VND 16,000 - 18,000/kg, Huong Lai at VND 22,000/kg, Nang Hoa at VND 21,000/kg, and Japanese rice at VND 22,000/kg.

Raw IR504 rice remained at VND 8,100 - 8,250/kg, while milled IR504 rice traded between VND 9,500 - 9,700/kg. OM380 raw rice was priced at VND 7,800 - 7,900/kg, and finished OM380 ranged VND 8,800 - 9,000/kg.

By-products such as bran and dried rice husks were stable between VND 7,250 - 10,000/kg, with dry bran at VND 9,000 - 10,000/kg.

Regarding production, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment reported that by October 20, the 2025 Summer-Autumn crop in the Mekong Delta had been fully harvested, covering 1.239 million hectares, with an average yield of 6.058 tons/ha and an output of 7.509 million tons of paddy.

For the Autumn-Winter crop, 763,000 hectares were planted, exceeding the plan, with 263,000 hectares already harvested, averaging 5.677 tons/ha and yielding 1.492 million tons. The 2025 Main Crop reached 144,000 hectares, equivalent to 81.95% of the plan, while the 2025 - 2026 Winter-Spring crop had begun on 54,000 hectares out of a target of 1.266 million hectares.

Across Asia, rice trade remained quiet. India’s rice exports rebounded slightly from a nine-year low thanks to a stronger rupee, though demand stayed weak. Meanwhile, Thai rice prices fell for the sixth straight week to the lowest level in 18 years amid muted buying activity.

A trader in Kolkata said few export deals were signed last week as buyers waited for prices to drop further. India’s 5% broken parboiled rice was quoted at USD 344 - 350/ton, up from USD 340 - 345/ton a week earlier, while white 5% broken rice traded at USD 360 - 370/ton, slightly higher from the lowest level since May 2016.

In Thailand, 5% broken rice stayed around USD 337/ton, little changed from USD 335 - 340/ton the previous week - the lowest since October 2007. Traders in Bangkok noted that weak demand and ample supply continued to keep prices low.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh increased rice imports to cool domestic prices, signing a government-to-government deal with Myanmar to buy 50,000 tons of white rice at USD 376.5/ton, along with 50,000 tons of parboiled rice via international tender at USD 355.99/ton.
